The author has taken a photograph of a gundi (Rodentia: Ctenodactylidae) in a Lybian region with no data for this family of rodents. Ctenodactylus and Massoutiera, the two possible genera for the individual photographed, have only been found at considerable distances from the place of this observation, a wadi that cuts through a rocky plateau surrounded by vast sand or gravel expanses. As gundis are strictly rupicolous animals that avoid unbroken terrain, this is probably an isolated population. The Fezzan has been judged a favourable region for rodent endemism because of habitat fragmentation. Although gundis look like ecologically versatile biogeographical relicts, the study of isolated populations might make unexpected differences emerge from among similarities of a more ancient origin.
